EGYPT LAND FIRST EVER WIN AT WOMEN’S AFCON

​The Lady Pharaohs of Egypt grab their first ever victory in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after narrowly beating Zimbabwe 1-0 on Tuesday in Yaounde.

Salma Tarik was the unsung heroic for the Egyptians as her 82nd minute strike was enough to hand the Lady Pharaohs their maiden victory at the final tournament.

The match was evenly balanced, Zimbabwe slightly the better of the two.BUT they lost to the Pharaohs’ superior tactics.

Egypt, who lost their last 5 international games allowed Zimbabwe to attack for the entire match and ventured forward only when necessary. 

Zimbabwe almost responded but their goal two minutes later was disallowed, as they crushed to their first defeat of the campaign.

The Egyptians made their first appearance of the eight team tournament in 1998, the maiden edition of the tournament hosted by Nigeria. 

They were paired alongside host Nigeria, DR Congo and Morocco where they lost all their three group stage matches.They were beaten 0-6 by Nigeria, 1-4 by DR Congo and 1-4 to Morocco.

The Pharaohs lost their first game by 0-2 to host Cameroon in the tournament opener last Saturday, but a win over Zimbabwe has revived their hope of qualifying from their group to the semi-final of the tournament.

Egypt now occupies the 2nd place in Group A with 3 points behind host Cameroon who have all the 6 points from their first two games after beating South Africa by a lone goal.

South Africa now is 3rd in the group with Zimbabwe at the bottom with one point each.

Egypt travels to Limbe to face South Africa on Friday whilst Zimbabwe lock horns with host Cameroon in Yaounde same time in their last group matches.
