The truth behind Dani Alves’s contract confusion

There has been a lot written and said about the conflicting accounts surrounding the length of Dani Alves’s contract at Barcelona. As ever, ultimately the issue boils down to money.
At the beginning of the season, the full-back asserted that his deal at the Camp Nou expired in June 2016, while the club insisted that June 2015 was the correct date.
In his most recent press conference, Barça director of football Andoni Zubizarreta sought to set the record straight, revealing that a meeting
had been held with Alves to clear the air, at which the Brazilian agreed that the club was right.
Zubi also explained that the defender had got confused because back when he signed his contract in March 2011, he had initially requested the inclusion of a clause for an optional extra season but later changed his mind.
The reason why Alves decided against this option was that the club’s terms would have required
him to take a substantial pay cut to stay for another year, something he obviously wasn’t interested in.
The 32-year-old is currently on €11m a season before tax and if he doesn’t reach an agreement to stay on at the Camp Nou, he’ll leave as a free agent next June. However, he will likely struggle to find many suitors willing to pay such high
wages for a player of his age
